What is Mini Laparoscopy? .

Mini Laparoscopy is a procedure that minimizes the post operatory pain and the complications, accelerating in this way the recovery of the patient. In the Mini Laparoscopy Surgery the instruments of work that are used have a 2.0 – 3.5 milimeters of diameter. It means that the incisions in the skin don’t need to be sutured, and therefore, it doesn’t leave scars as the conventional surgery and some laparoscopic surgeries do.
How is it different with the conventional laparoscopy? The instruments of work used range between the 5 and 10 milimeters of diameter. That turns the Mini Laparoscopy into a better option.

Aesthetically speaking, practically the mini laparoscopic surgery does not leave scar, so some have called it “invisible surgery”; obviously it will depend on the skin and the ability to heal of the patient, but in most cases the results are practically “invisibles”, which let us to affirm that we are reaching to a surgery without scars.

Pain: by being a less invasive surgery due to the diameter of the incisions this surgery reduces considerably the pain. It will give the patient a better recuperation, and will allow him (her) a faster return to his (her) normal activities.

Therefore, the time of the post surgery recuperation is reduced substantially.

Why? Lets take as an example the Cholecystectomy (surgery for “stones in the gallbladder”, or gallbladder). The procedure requires hospitalization and it is performed under general anesthesia, the same way as the laparoscopic cholecystectomy and the open conventional cholecystectomy. The differences are the needing of greater skills and training on the part of the surgeon to perform the intracorporeal surgical knots, which replace the use of metallic staples. By working with 3 portals, whose incisions oscillate between the 2.5 -3 milimiters, instead of incisions of 5-10 milimiters of diameter. The result is minor incisions that do not need stitches, turning into a less agressive surgery which is aesthetically superior, and with a shorter recovery.

What kinds of surgical procedures can be performed by means of “Mini Laparoscopic Surgery”?
• Laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We talked previously about it, and it is the surgery that looks to remove the stones in the gallbladder, and the gallbladder.
• Laparoscopic Appendicectomy which consists in the removal of the ileocaecal appendix due to an Acute Appendicitis.
• Laparoscopic restauration of inguinal hernia. “A hernia occurs when the abdominal muscle of the internal layers are weak, whereof a lump or tear is evolved.”
• Anti-reflux Laparoscopic Surgery. It is a surgery to treat the acidity.
• Diagnostic and Staging Laparoscopies which are procedures that help to make difficult diagnosis, and to stage advanced illness that would need a laparotomy which are big open surgeries.
Mini Laparoscopic surgery is preferible from the medical and aesthetical point of view. A surgery that shows a big scar, a painful and complicated recovery, can be as annoying as the complication that caused the surgery.
